The Biomedical Data Science Lab (BMDS Lab) at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich, is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary research team working at the intersection of data science, clinical simulation, and critical care research.
Project background
Intensive care units are among the most cognitively demanding environments in medicine. Clinicians must rapidly integrate streams of patient data, coordinate with teams, monitor alarms, and document interventions, all under extreme time pressure. Yet how clinicians actually allocate attention, reason verbally, and make decisions remains poorly understood. This PhD project addresses that gap. Sitting at the intersection of clinical simulation, multimodal AI, and human factors research, the successful candidate will design high-fidelity ICU simulation scenarios, capture a unique synchronized dataset of gaze, speech, and documentation behaviour from practising ICU clinicians, and evaluate how these cognitive markers can improve AI-assisted clinical decision support systems (CDSS).
This 4-year position is fully funded by the ETH Foundation.
Job description
As a PhD candidate, you will be an integral part of our interdisciplinary research team spanning biomedical data science, clinical simulation, and human factors. You will take an active role in shaping and executing a novel research programme at the frontier of multimodal AI and ICU clinical cognition. Under the guidance of Prof. Jutzeler, a dedicated postdoctoral researcher, and collaborators, you will have access to unique clinical datasets, wearable sensing technology, and state-of-the-art simulation facilities.
Design, script, and iteratively refine high-fidelity ICU simulation scenarios in collaboration with clinical experts, ensuring authenticity and cognitive challenge across participant experience levels
Configure and operate wearable smart glasses and synchronised multimodal recording systems capturing eye-tracking, audio, video, and digital documentation
Recruit and conduct simulation sessions with ICU clinicians across Switzerland, managing data collection, participant coordination, and protocol adherence
Preprocess, annotate, and manage a rich multimodal dataset, applying both qualitative and quantitative analytical methods to model clinician attention, verbal reasoning, and documentation behaviour
Develop and evaluate machine learning models, including unimodal, fusion, and attention-based transformer architectures, to assess the added value of cognitive data streams for clinical decision support
Conduct systematic literature reviews across the fields of ICU decision-making, multimodal AI, eye-tracking, and clinical simulation
Document and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences
Contribute to the supervision of Master’s students and selected teaching activities within the BMDS lab
Profile
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, or a related field
Strong programming skills and experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow
Interest in multimodal data, time-series analysis, or NLP
Excellent English; German or French is an asset for participant interactions
Capacity for self-directed work within an interdisciplinary team
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and German
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Highly organized with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with eye-tracking or wearable sensor technology
Background in clinical simulation, usability evaluation, or human factors
Familiarity with speech processing, speaker diarization, or ASR
Knowledge of explainable AI methods (SHAP, LIME, attention visualisation)
Exposure to clinical environments or health informatics

Project background
Advancing the Frontiers of Bioelectronics and Synthetic Biology
Our group integrates state-of-the-art synthetic biology with advanced nanotechnology, and electrogenetic interfaces to engineer human cells for next generation bioelectronic medicine, designing programmable cells that respond to electrical, electromagnetic, acoustic and biochemical cues to achieve wireless, real-time control of therapeutic protein expression and metabolic regulation. Leveraging innovative platforms such as direct-current-actuated regulation, electromagnetic programming of wireless expression, and closed-loop systems, we aim to translate these technologies into clinically relevant, minimally invasive therapies for cancer, as well as metabolic, neurodegenerative, autoimmune, and infectious diseases.
Job description
Postdoctoral projects will combine catalyst engineering, computational simulation, bioelectrode device fabrication, and electrical engineering to develop bioelectronic interfaces enabling closed-loop programming of cellular behaviour and real-time monitoring of metabolic activity
There will also be opportunities to design novel bioelectronic implants and develop specialized control software
Profile
We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a background in physics, material science, or chemistry
Ideally with expertise in bioelectronics or software simulations, or a strong willingness to acquire it, alongside solid knowledge of electrochemistry and materials chemistry
Candidates should be eager to collaborate closely with molecular biologists and bioengineers and demonstrate a strong academic record with the ambition to pursue a career in industrial R&D, or entrepreneurship

Le programme doctoral en droit s’adresse principalement aux doctorants et doctorantes en droit affiliés aux Universités membres et partenaires de la CUSO. Il a pour but d’améliorer les conditions de réalisation de la thèse de doctorat en favorisant les contacts entre chercheurs dans un cadre de recherche stimulant.
Diverses activités (méthodologiques, thématiques, interdisciplinaires et professionnelles) sont organisées chaque année par des Professeurs et des chercheurs des Universités de Fribourg, Genève, Lausanne et Neuchâtel ainsi que par l’Institut suisse de droit comparé et l’Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement. La liste des activités proposées est régulièrement mise à jour et les membres inscrits au programme sont tenus informés lorsque de nouvelles activités sont mises en ligne.

Vous souhaitez organiser une activité dans le cadre du programme doctoral en droit? Nous vous invitons à nous soumettre des projets que vous êtes en train d’organiser, afin que nous puissions les intégrer à notre programme d’activités. Il peut s’agir de séminaires, atelier ou conférences avec des intervenants suisses ou internationaux sur des questions thématiques, interdisciplinaires ou méthodologiques.
Le programme doctoral en droit peut contribuer au financement de projets revêtant un intérêt pour les jeunes chercheurs-euses (niveau doctoral) ouverts à tous les doctorant(e)s en droit inscrits à ce programme en soutenant le frais d’organisation, les frais de repas et de déplacements des intervenants et des participants inscrits au programme doctoral.

Die Forschungseinheit Wirtschafts-und Sozialwissenschaften bearbeitet sozialwissenschaftliche Fragen zu den WSL-Forschungsthemen und sucht per
1. September 2026 oder nach Vereinbarung befristet für zwei Jahre (mit Option auf Verlängerung) eine/-n
Im Rahmen eines Horizon-Projektes erforschen Sie die Vielfalt der Wahrnehmungen der biologischen Vielfalt und der zugrundeliegenden Faktoren für diese Wahrnehmungen in der breiten Öffentlichkeit und bei wichtigen Interessengruppen in mehreren europäischen Ländern.
Sie analysieren die bestehende Literatur und entwickeln darauf aufbauend ein Rahmenkonzept zur Wahrnehmung der biologischen Vielfalt. Zudem entwickeln Sie Fragebögen für die allgemeine Bevölkerung sowie spezifische Akteursgruppen und werten diese aus. Sie arbeiten eng mit Umwelt- und Sozialwissenschaftler/-innen sowie Kommunikationsexpert/-innen aus anderen europäischen Ländern zusammen. Sie publizieren die Ergebnisse in internationalen Zeitschriften und präsentieren sie an Projekt-Meetings, wissenschaftlichen Konferenzen sowie in der Praxis.
Sie haben ein sozialwissenschaftliches Studium mit Umweltbezug abgeschlossen (z.B. Umweltsoziologie, Umweltpsychologie, Geographie), in diesem Themenbereich promoviert und bringen Erfahrung in quantitativer Sozialforschung und Statistik mit. Gute Kenntnisse des Forschungsfeldes "Mensch-Natur-Verhältnis" sind von Vorteil. Sie kommunizieren mündlich und schriftlich fliessend in Englisch und haben gute Sprachkenntnisse in Deutsch. The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (D-MAVT) is working actively on developing numerical and experimental tools to probe single- and multiphase granular (particulate) systems.
Project background
Granular systems are ubiquitous in nature (e.g. rock avalanches or dunes) and of fundamental importance to industry. However, despite their widespread use and occurrence, many important phenomena, such as segregation, surface instabilities or jamming, i.e. the transition between a fluid- to solid-like state, are poorly understood. This project explores specifically the effect of particle deformability and non-sphericity on the dynamics and rheology of granular systems. Flexible particles deform under stress, while the deformation in turn affects the contact forces and stress transmission giving rise to complex rheological phenomena such as transient jamming or stress-induced orientational ordering. Although deformable, aspherical particle systems are expected to be rich in physical phenomena, they have been largely avoided owing to difficulties in making experimental measurements in such systems and in their numerical description.
This PhD position is part of a joint project that combines the expertise of two research groups ( Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering , Prof. and the Institute for Biomedical Imaging Magnetic Resonance Technology , Prof. Prüssmann) and the PhD candidates hired by the two groups involved are expected to collaborate on a daily basis.
Job description
The objective of the PhD candidate hired by the Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering is to
Advance numerical tools to model non-spherical and deformable granular systems
Establish camera-based experimental techniques such as photo-elasticimetry to determine contact forces and stress fields in such systems
Develop and use machine-learning based models to correlate particle deformation and contact forces in 3D systems
Profile
Applicants for this PhD position are expected to have a very good MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related disciplines
Previous experience in numerical modelling or imaging techniques is desirable
We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals, able to work in a team and with excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
Working in a top-level research environment, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop their research abilities
The position is available from July 2026 onwards
